Today we recognize and remember four chaplains who sacrificed their lives to save their fellow service members during World War II. In 1943, four chaplains, Methodist Minister Lt. George L. Fox, Reformed Minister Lt. Clark V. Poling, Rabbi Lt. Alexander D. Goode, and Roman Catholic Priest, Lt. John P. Washington, boarded the USAT Dorchester en route to Army command base at Narsarsuaq in Southern Greenland. But on the morning of February 3, a German submarine torpedoed the Dorchester. The four chaplains surrendered their life jackets so that other sailors had a chance to survive in the frigid waters.
